Photos of John Street, Aberdeen, which I chose as a bit of a link to graffiti in Aberdeen, which I explore deeper later in the development phase; a kebab shop in Edinburgh, again for lettering and signs; and - the only photo I took in England - Sutton's Bookshop in Ulverston. I chose the photo of the bookshop because it reminded me very strongly of my uncle's flat in Edinburgh in the late 00s, and I personally have a lot of nostalgia around Ulverston as a place. Its colours reminded me of 'Pause', a machine stitch piece by Alice Kettle, so I included an image of that too.
I picked out a few colours from it and included some samples of fabric scrap I had to try and communicate the texture I felt I saw in the photo.
The further three photos on this page were all chosen for their signs and font. I drew more colours from these, and noted: 'I shall greatly saturate and exaggerate the colours I use through research and into development. I find that if I do not I am wont to stick to those colours I find 'safe' or personally pleasant, which restricts my creativity. When I finalise my colour palette I shall desaturate and tonalise them'.
