Visual research into Margiela RTW A/W 2017, and how it applies to my point about nostalgia - I pulled out references, inspiration and connections as I interpreted them; as well as design concepts that would also apply to my own work when it came to designing the ten conceptual pieces.
A very basic oversized turtleneck. 'layer-able, more basic pieces'.
Plush jacket, possibly some kind of fake fur or shearling, with triangles shaved into it. Hat akin to a crown. Circular cutouts in the skirt. 'Exaggeration. Motif - arrows/triangles - shaved into fur or shearling. The triangles remind me of the play/skip buttons on older mp3 players.' I included a picture of an iPod Shuffle 4th Generation to have an immediate visual link to what I meant.
Black suit with sheer panels, safety pins attached to loose white strings, which reminded me of wired headphones. The model has some sort of metalwork headpiece in their hair. 'Metalwork reminds me of foil in hair for dying/bleaching in a salon. The feeling of 'not quite being ready'. Working mesh panels into basic, classic pieces.'
Oversized belted wool coat, with cut-outs of what I believe are dinosaurs, showing the bright green contrasting underneath. 'Instead of being applied to the piece the motifs are cut out of it. Makes the piece much more playful and youthful. Layered.' The motifs were reminiscent of children's drawings, so I found a picture of a dinosaur drawn by a child online.
Sleeveless A-line knee-length dress, with tulle layered over the top and gathered at one hip. Dress is printed with a woman's face. 'Likeness/face applied to fabric in print - Nancy motif? Reminds me of Soulwax album covers. Modernised design on a very traditional A-line dress and its silhouette.' Soulwax are a DJ/musician duo, and several of their album covers are made up of dots of different size and density, like the print on this dress, and when viewed from close up they really look like nothing, but from a distance a pattern/lettering becomes visible.
Woollen coat with sequin panels and orange and white trim over shorts and a cropped top - with an upwards pointing triangle between the bust. Oversized, messy knit scarf. 'Modern, bright, synthetic fabrics (sequin panels) incorporated into more traditional tailoring. Chunky, messy knit.' I did an A5 knit sample inspired by this with some scrap yarns, focusing not on colour but on texture and contrast between yarn weight.
