Language as a culture and culture as a language - youth culture; the cumulative result of a melting pot of style, gender, religious and political beliefs, ethnicity and culture amongst teenagers and young adults.
Style and fashion preferences as a result of nostalgia for that age group's childhood, 2000 - 2009 rough timeframe, current visual youth culture as a reflection of this time period.
I wanted to source my reference images through my own personal photographs as well as images and works sourced from the internet, mainly Flickr and old blog archives. I want demonstrations of youth culture in urban environments, real ones, natural, in-the-moment. Specifically in Scottish urban hubs - Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh - as this was and is my experience, which will make it more engaging to work with and produce much more personal results, compared to if I chose to look at somewhere like London.
Youth - low or limited budget for personal items. Sense of DIY, repurposing older/unwanted items to increase longevity. Shared or common experiences; cliques, style groups and music/gig culture.
Communicating interests and beliefs through fashion.
Cities - contrast of new builds against historic ones. Greys and neutrals - concrete, cinderblocks, granite, iron, steel, slate - against authoritative brights - building sites, traffic and warning signs, graffiti.
A/W 25, ready-to-wear. Playful, versatile pieces that are easy to layer and able to pair with a multitude of basics to make them accessible to any person's pre-existing wardrobe, no matter how scarce. Able to be styled up or down, stylistic accessibility.
