Three photos taken by me on my Canon Powershot A460 - all in Glasgow; tiles in the stairwell of my friend's sister's flat, my friend Nancy smoking in a phonebox on Cambridge Street, and one taken from the top deck of a bus in Kelvinbridge. They were all taken in the moment, and I never took them with the intention to use them for design work - which is ultimately why I chose to use them, as they are an authentic look into urban environments and situations through the lens of the youth experiencing it.
I chose the tile photo for its colours and textures; I chose the photo of Nancy because I like the composition a lot, I find it very striking and relatively timeless - it could've been taken at any point from the millennium to current day, reflecting the note on'shared experience' in my mindmap. The Kelvinbridge photo is more of a location 'link' rather than anything I would ever extrapolate visually from, and in hindsight it does come across as slightly meaningless.
I picked out a few colours from the tile photo, and had a pre-existing cotton sample from some cold water dye experiments I'd done, which matched the cool grey/green/blue interior of the phone box. Looking at the (very blurry) greenery in the Kelvinbridge photo, I included a picture of 'Celtic Cross' by Lucienne Day for its white tree-like shapes because I liked the inversion - the background being green, instead of the trees.
Photos of Union Street, Aberdeen; Zucchini Greengrocers on Nithsdale Road in Glasgow; and a bus stop on Sauchiehall Street. I chose these because they all featured architecture, and signs with clear lettering that I could use in collages for development work. At this point, I had the idea that I would end up making slogans of some kind, and wanted fonts to pull from.
