Both of these pages are a deeper look at the graffiti in Aberdeen specifically. I wrote on page 29: 'Obviously it's not right for me to take someone else's [graffiti] tag and just slap it onto my work. I'm more interested in the composition of the tags and the way the paint is used to create the strokes.'
I mixed baking powder with acrylic paint to try and achieve the texture of brickwork. Using nail polish, pouring instead of painting, I duplicated two tags - the 'Tink' one, and the 'Shan' one - tilted the sketchbook to let it dribble down the page. I went over them with hot glue which I then painted back over, just to add some dimension to the new texture.
I really liked the construction of the letters in the 'Shan' tag, and wrote: 'I really like the elongation of the lower half of the characters in this tag. I think it's achieved by withdrawing the spray can at an angle? Experiment.'
